| The project is located in a valley overlooking the city of Lanzhou and the Yellow River. It is surrounded by beautiful landscape full of fruit trees and vegetable farms with many places for horse riding and walks. The first phase consists of 168 rooms including 12 nos. 3 star standard suites, 22 nos. standard rooms and 52 nos. 2 star standard rooms built into the mountain side. The design of the 2 star standard rooms are based on the modern cave construction system with natural ventilation to preserve energy and to provide an economic room facility. This part of the Inn aims to prove that earth construction is feasible. The design of the Inn is based on the traditional narrow courtyard houses in the north, facilitating the winter sunlight into the building and stopping the summer sun penetration. The fish ponds in the complex reflect the atmosphere of a mountain inn set in a traditional garden environment. The Inn has a 100 person restaurant, coffee shop, swimming pool, shops, management office and senior staff quarters. There is a service centre equipped with maintenance facilities, staff canteen, staff quarters and district staff training school. The building material used includes locally produced bricks and precast concrete elements. All stairs are built of wood and all external walls are constructed by ram earth method to harmonies with locality. This is an attempt to design an appropriate and economical hotel in the developing regions of China using local material and local construction methods. The design is different from the usual glass curtain wall and revolving restaurant solutions are normally come across. |
