Sites 4 and 5 are designed as a single complex connected by buildings across the street and underground connecting roads. The eastern end of the pedestrian street between the two sites is developed as the district square to facilitate the concentration of pedestrian in the area. The major entries into the buildings are situated on the eastern side along Xidan North Street with four to five storey high atrium interlaced with glass lifts and escalators. The design of the shop front is inspired by the traditional concept and together with the elevated walkway system which links all the sites created an entry environment full of local identity and commercial atmosphere. The external treatment of the buildings clearly reflected the different functions of the various parts. The sun shades on all office floors cater for the climatic requirements and the commercial parts are cladded in marble to reflect the luxury commercial activities therein. The bulk of the building is divided into several vertical groups by the external fire stairs in order to lessen the massiveness of the whole complex. The simple slanting roof shape echoes the silhouette of the traditional roof shape together with the pale gold colored aluminium cladding of the office floors gives one the impression of a well articulated building with a sense of belonging to the capital city of Beijing. |
